Glossary: ASPECT RATIO

The ratio of width to height of a display or screen. The most common are 4:3 or 1.33:1 and 16:9 or 1.78:1 (also known as video widescreen).

Note that High Definition material is in "wide screen" which means a minimum of 16:9 aspect ratio and sometimes 2.35:1.
